To preface this: Evangelion is my favorite anime. Ever. This series is incredibly near and dear to my heart; I admit I'm rather protective of it, and also a bit of purist. This show influenced so much of my aesthetic - especially in regards to design (background: the 'mechas' in this series marked a dramatic shift in the mecha genre in terms of design - whereas before, mechas were largely bulky and angular, Evangelion's subjects were long, lean, and based on organic shapes and smooth lines - for an obvious reason - and that aspect would largely influence how the mechas after it were designed. This was one of the huge issues when developing the show - those associated with the project were worried how it would be received with designs being so dramatically different from its predecessors - but ultimately, it contributed to its success. The designs themselves are sexy, in my opinion, and I fully blame this series for any weird attraction I have to figures covered in sleek shells and so on. Moving on.)
I did not know of the movie remakes until a friend placed 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone in my hands. While I have my own issues with the first movie in relation to how well the atmosphere of the show translates to a condensed movie version, I still think of it as a great and beautiful success of a movie and condensation of the beginning of Evangelion.
I had long been awaiting the opportunity to watch 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance with friends whom I had shared the series with, and finally got the chance recently. It's a stark divergence from the original series, and I've been thinking of it since. To sum up my thoughts: no me gusta. So if you loved the movie and would rather not listen to my personal blathering on why it did not appeal to me, skip the cut. If you want to indulge me in my word vomit, click on ahead.
( Why 2.2 Fails, in my humble opinion )
I also apologize for neglecting LJ. I still lurk a lot but much of my actual blogging has been at tumblr, recently.
